Hi, I am Salman Maqbool

My technical background is a mechanical engineer turned software developer and machine/deep learning engineer and researcher. More recently, I have exlored a bit more of social sciences with a focus on social development and healtcare.

I like programming and my work has mostly revolved around different applications of machne learning and deep learning. I am also currently quite interested in (web) application development, data engineering, and DevOps.

You can find more about my work and education on my LinkedIn. This page primarily acts as a supplement to that.

m2caiSeg: Semantic Segmentation of Laparoscopic Images using Convolutional Neural Networks [arXiv, 2020]

My main contributions were annotation of the m2caiTool dataset, training and evaluation of various neural network architectures including GANs for synthetic data generation as well as capusle networks for semantic segmentation, as well as writing the complete paper. This core content of the paper was completed in 2018.

Real-time fish detection in complex backgrounds using probabilistic background modelling [Ecological Informatics, 2019]

My main contributions were the complete annotation of the Fish4Knowledge dataset, trying out different background subtraction algorithms inlcuding Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), as wel as writing the literature review and method section of the paper.

People Counting in Dense Crowd Images Using Sparse Head Detections [IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (TCSVT), 2018]

I worked on the entire deep learning (CNN) section of the paper, from selection and training of the neural networks to writing that part of the paper.
